nighttime skincare routine

Welcome back for the second installment in my skincare series!  If you missed the first post on my morning skincare routine you can click HERE to check it out.  Today I will be discussing my favorite nighttime products and I'm going to warn you I go a little HAM with the evening routine.  But there is a method to my madness and I feel like before bed is the best time to use serums and heavy creams so our skin can really soak up all those great ingredients and regenerate while we get our beauty sleep.  I have tried many night creams and anti-aging products over the years, but the offerings below are definitely the best of the best and the items I keep coming back to.  They all have a different purpose, but I find using these products collectively leaves my skin feeling hydrated, looking youthful, and cuts down on redness.  Keep reading to learn my nighttime saviors!

philosophy lush face wash eye cream

The first step is any great skincare routine is a cleanser.  I have been using Philosphy’s Purity One-Step Facial Cleanser for about eight years now and have yet to try a product that beats it.  The formula infused with meadowfoam seed oil does an amazing job of washing off the days makeup without drying or irritating my sensitive skin.  This oh so gentle cleanser also does a phenomenal job of taking off pesky eye makeup, an area where  other cleansers I have tried have fallen short.  After splashing my face with some warm water I massage a dime sized amount of this cleanser onto my face for about 30 seconds then rinse off and pat dry with a clean wash cloth.  If I went especially heavy with the eye makeup that day and there’s some leftover I’ll go in with an Almay Oil Free Gentle Eye Makeup Remover Pad to wipe away any excess product.  (Another favorite is the Lancome Bi-FacilDouble Action Eye Makeup Remover, but I sadly just finished up my bottle. ) After I finish cleansing the next product that has become a staple in my nighttime routine is the LUSH Cosmetics Enchanted Eye Cream.  Where do I begin for my love of this product??? get such a bang for your buck ($26.95 for 1.5oz), the consistency is amazing (it’s on the thinner side) and glides on like a dream, and I have noticed such an improvement in my under eye area since using this cream for the past two years.   The formula is 100% natural and infused with lavender honey water to reduce swelling and almond and jojoba oils to moisturize.  I’m obsessed.

Now that we’re done cleansing, have removed any leftover eye makeup and got our eye cream patted on it’s time to moisturize.  For days I feel my skin is looking lackluster I'll go in with the Fresh Black Tea Age-Delay Cream.  This cream is a new skincare discovery this year and the most $$ I have ever spent on skincare.  I don’t what magic is in this little tub, but the immediate effects I see in my skin from using this product justify the price tag.  I swear I use this at night and wake up in the morning with a new face.  The consistency of this cream is thick and formulated to visibly reduce fine lines and firm the skin with a dose of black tea ferment to fight against damaging free radicals.  (Warning: this cream is thick and will leave your face looking and feeling oily.  This is designed as a night cream and does not wear well under makeup at all.)  Another tried and true favorite is good ‘ol Ponds Dry Skin Cream retailing at only $4 for a large sized jar.  This cream seriously saves my skin in the dry winter months spent in upstate NY and it’s great for layering over serums and treatments which I’ll get to down below.  My mother used this cream, I have used this cream since I was a teenager, it’s a great all-around moisturizer with a simple formula that won’t break you out or irritate sensitive skin.  If you have dry skin you will LOVE this product.

skincare treatments serums fresh lancome

Now onto the fun part…the serums and treatments.  This is an area that can get expensive fast so I have only three products that I use on a rotating basis.  The first love is the Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil.  When I feel like my skin has been acting up or needs n extra boost of moisture I’ll apply a couple drops of this oil onto my face after cleansing, rub in, wait until dry and then proceed with the Pond’s Dry Skin Cream.  This travel sized bottle here is only $18.50 and I have noticed such a decrease in redness on my skin since using this product.  My skin looks hydrated and plump the morning after and I notice a decrease in oiliness and shine as the day wears on.  Next is a product I picked up at a natural bath store in New Jersey.  This Glycolic Daily Skin Balancing Treatment contains a concentration of glycolic and fruit acids to naturally exfoliate the skin.  I am partial to chemical exfoliants compared to physical exfoliants and love how this clears up my skin.  (Comparable products would be the ever so popular Pixi Glow Tonic and the Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brightening Toner.)  If you have yet to try a chemical exfoliant I would highly recommend it!  And last, but not least in the serums arena is the cult beauty favorite Lancôme Advanced GÉNIFIQUE Youth Activating Concentrate.   Another great anti-aging serum and one that revives dull skin.  The gentle formula advertises to act on the “10 Key Signs of Youth” and doesn’t irritate or break out my skin.  Do you see a trend here?? my skin is sensitive and picky with its skincare products!  So to shoot it straight Lancome’s GENIFIQUE is crazy expensive ($78 a bottle), but if you’re interested in trying it out go to your local Lancome counter and request a sample.  This is a sample size here that I was gifted at a counter and it has lasted me months.  To clarify I like to apply these three treatments after I apply my eye cream, but before I apply my Pond’s Dry Skin Cream.  And a good tip is to give them a good 10-to 20 seconds to dry and seep into my skin before following up with moisturizer.

And then it’s time to go to bed.  Although this may sound like a lot, this routine takes me only 3-5 minutes at nighttime and the positive benefits I have seen in my skin have been worth it.  I am so passionate about skincare solely for the purpose that if we don't take care of our skin no amount of money we spend on makeup is going to be worth it if our skin is a hot mess underneath.  I hope you enjoyed this post and gained some inspiration for your nighttime skincare routine.  Leave me a comment below letting me know your favorite nighttime product and I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

xoxo Nicole
