carry on travel essentials

Ok, so I love to travel and last weekend I was lucky enough to jet off to NYC for a couple days.  My college roommate Danielle lives there and it was so nice to spend time with her and catch up.  She is a hoot and a half and we make such a great pair.  I am the type A meticulous planner and she is the easy breezy go with the flow type.  Just call us Betty & Veronica.  But we had such an amazing weekend going to The Cloisters in Fort Tyron park, hitting up the amazing rooftop bar that is Jimmy at the James Soho, and brunched and shopped to our hearts content.  I also had this amazing donut the size of my head (if you don’t believe me check out my instagram @brazenbrunette).   But going back to my type A personality I am all about the planning before I embark on a trip and I have my carry on essentials down to a science.  I don’t check a bag because c’mon who’s paying an extra $50 for that, and I like the security of knowing where my luggage is.  (Does anyone remember that scene from Meet the Parents where Ben Stiller doesn’t want to give up his suitcase?  Yup, that’s me.)  So I bring a small suitcase, my travel tote of life the Longchamp Large Le Pliage tote, and a small crossbody bag that I can keep my money/ID/phone/keys in and throw in my tote if need be.  Let me just sing the praises of the Longchamp Large Le Pliage tote for a second.  This bag is amazing.  I bought mine about six years ago when I was living in Madrid and it has held up so well.  It fits so much stuff, I love that it has a zipper top, and it comes in so many amazing colors.  At $145 it’s pricey but such a great investment.  Seriously, I own so many tote bags and I would give them all up for this one.  But I digress….in this post I’m going to share all the essentials I keep in my travel tote to keep those long flights comfortable.  Keep reading to see what I pack!

Carry-On Essentials:
  • Book & Magazine (Loving Goldfinch by Donna Tart, it’s a long one but worth it.)
  • Headphones (Rocking out to T-Swift’s 1989 album 24/7.)
  • Eye mask (If want to take a nap and don’t want to be disturbed.)
  • Neck Pillow
  • Blanket Scarf
  • Fuzzy Socks  (Airplanes can be freezing and there is nothing worse than being cold and uncomfortable.  Pack some fuzzy socks and a blanket scarf.  Trust me, you will thank me later.)
  • Water Bottle
  • Snacks (I am hungry all the time.  So I make sure to pack a granola bar, a piece of fresh fruit, and some nuts for protein.  Save yourself from dropping $10 for a tic tac at the airport convenience store.)
  • Phone Charger
  • Face Moisturizer (Planes can be so dry and dehydrating on the skin.  Thus, I pack a multi-purpose face lotion that I can also use as a hand cream in a pinch.)
  • Face wipes.  (Great to have to clean your hands or to take makeup off if you’re on a long flight.)
  • Dry Shampoo
  • Glasses (Remember what I said about the plane being dry?  Always nice to have your glasses handy if you want to take your contacts out and give your eyes a rest.  That is if you wear contacts like me.)
  • Deodorant (No one wants to be stinking up the place.)
  • Passport

In my Makeup Bag:
  • Eye Drops
  • Blotting Papers (Shine City is not a good look.)
  • Band-Aids
  • Feminine products (No one wants to be unprepared mid-flight when Aunt Flow arrives.)
  • Hair Ties
  • Bobby Pins
  • Hair Brush
  • Lip Balm
  • Tide Pen
  • Tissues

Ok, whewww I know that’s a lot of stuff.  But trust me with this travel tote I am never left unprepared.  And the best part is it all fits neatly into my Longchamp tote with room to spare.  I hope you found this post helpful and it gave you some ideas if you have any trips coming up this summer.  Leave me a comment below letting me know what your travel essentials are!

P.S. I’m sorry I have been MIA these past couple weeks.  Things have been crazy with work and traveling, but no worries we will promptly be returning to our regularly scheduled program with new posts going up every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  I have so much exciting content in the works for summer, so I hope you check back!  Thanks for stopping by and I hope your week is off to a great start!!

xoxo Nicole
