SIX QUICK MAKEUP STEPS THAT MAKE A BIG IMPACT

Makeup Steps Big Impact

So you may be looking at the above picture and thinking what is up with this girls face?  Well I assure you there is a method to my madness.  As the title of this blog post would imply I’m featuring six quick and easy steps that make a big impact in how your makeup looks.  Now we’ll call the right side of my face ‘Plain Jane’, on this side I just have basic foundation, concealer, blush, an eyeshadow and top lash mascara.  We’ll call the left side ‘Foxy Cleopatra’, on this side I’ve jazzed it up and added all the steps listed below, that in my opinion, just give that finishing touch.  Now these tips will work for anyone regardless of face shape, makeup expertise, or skin tone and they are all super easy.  I hope you guys had a wonderful weekend and enjoy this post to kick off your week!

1. Contouring.
Now I’m not talking about Kim K tribal stripes, I’m saying super basic and easy contouring.  By running some bronzer underneath your cheekbones, on your temples, across the jawline, and on the sides of the nose this makes a huge impact in the way your face shape appears.  You can see in the picture on the left how the bronzer creates a shadow under the cheekbone giving a more pronounced and flattering effect.  My favorite bronzer to use to create a natural looking contour and bring warmth to the face is the NARS bronzing powder in Laguna, you can check out my full review HERE. (If you want to learn some more about highlighting and contouring you can click on my full tutorial HERE.)

2. Filling in your eyebrows.
If there is one thing you take away from this blog post let it be the importance of filling in your eyebrows.  They frame your whole face, balance out any heavy eye makeup, and just pull together a makeup look.  Now I know some of us are blessed with those envious Lily Collins eyebrows and can skip this step, but I am not one of the lucky few.  My brows are sparse and I have a scar that goes right through my left eyebrow making this step a must for me.  My go-to tool for creating natural looking brows is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Medium Ash.

3. Coating your bottom lashes with mascara.
Now don’t let me get on my soapbox again about bottom lash mascara, because you know if I start I won’t stop.  But seriously, this extra step opens up your eyes, balances out the mascara on top and helps achieve that “doll-eye” effect.  My ride-or-die for this step is the Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara.  Check out my full review HERE.

4. Highlighting your brow bone and inner tear duct.
Had one too many glasses of pinot last night? This step is for you.  By highlighting these two areas with a light shade we’re giving the appearance of looking awake and well rested. This step is flattering on all eye shapes and really brightens the eye.  (P.S. I find a shimmery highlight under the brow bone can look a little harsh on me so I like to use a matte ivory under the brow bone and then a shimmery champagne in the tear duct.)  My favorite shade for highlighting is a Stila eyeshadow in the shade Kitten.

5. Lining the inner eye rim with a nude pencil.
So back to having too many glasses of pinot last night….This is another step that will help you look more awake and well rested.  By lining the inner rim with a nude pencil it gives the illusion of the eye being larger and brings out the whites of the eye.  My favorite pencil for this is Benefit’s Eye Brightbut there are so many great ones on the market.  NARS makes a good one and at the drugstore NYX Cosmetics came out with their version called the Wonder Pencil.

6. Lipliner.
And last, but not least is some lipliner.  So basic I know, but I am so bad at remembering this step!  When I was editing the pictures for this post I was reminded of what an impact lipliner has on me.  My lips kind of lighten around the border so lipliner is an integral step for me.  You guys know the benefits of lipliner…it keeps lipstick from bleeding, defines the lips, helps lipstick last longer, blah blah blah.  But the proof is in the pudding, lipliner is here to stay ladies.

And that is it! Whoooo typing out all those steps made me feel like you guys are gonna think these tips take forever, but they really don’t!  Seriously I can do all of these steps in under two minutes.  No lie, girlfriend.  Give these steps a go this week, (if they’re not already a part of your routine) and let me know how it goes! I love to hear your feedback.  And let me know in the comments below if there are any other extra steps you would include?
xoxo Nicole

  2. Even if I have a minimal makeup day (which is pretty much everyday) I always fill in my brows! I can't believe I went years without doing it. It makes a huge difference!
