NARS duo eyeshadow isolde kuala lumpur

I am a sucker for eyeshadow and operate from the mindset that you can never have enough.  I had been hearing great things about the NARS duo eyeshadows for what felt like forever, and when the Sephora VIB 20% off sale hit a couple months ago I picked up two shades in Kuala Lumpur and Islode.  I have fallen in love and after testing them out this past month feel I can provide you with a comprehensive review on these gems.

The first duo I purchased in Kuala Lumpur features a rose gold shadow & a boysenberry infused with gold.  The rose gold is this one is sheerer than the purple and takes some building up, but looks gorgeous as a highlighting shade.  And the purple in this duo is really the standout, it is unlike any purple eyeshadow I have used.  It's gorgeous and the pictures really don't do it justice.  Without fail, I have received compliments on my eyes every time I have worn this duo.

The second duo I picked up in Isolde, contains frosted ginger & shimmering copper shades.  I love how this looks with my brown eyes, but if you have blue eyes this duo would be a knockout.  (Copper and gold shades really bring out blue eyes because they are on the opposite side of the color wheel.)  The shadows in this duo are very similar to the MAC Eyeshadows in Amber Lights and Antiqued, but I would say the NARS duo is even more pigmented and creamy.

Swatched on the left is NARS duo eyeshadow in Isolde, on the right is NARS duo eyeshadow in Kuala Lumpur

The pros:

  • These are some of the creamiest shadows I have used, they blend like a dream!  They can also be applied wet or dry.
  • These shadows are extremely pigmented and opaque.  Seriously one swipe and the lid is evenly covered, delivering intense color payoff.
  • The color selection.  They seriously have so many duos available to pick from.  (Retailer Sephora alone offers 38 duos!)  They offer a good mix of shimmer, glitter, and matte shades in their eyeshadow range.
  • Retailing at $35 for 0.14 oz. you get a lot of product for the price and these duos will seriously last you forever.

The cons:

  • The price.  Even though you get a lot of product these duos are pricey at $35 a piece.  Especially when you consider you can get a decent high end palette for around $40.
  • You're probably going to need some additional shadow for a complete eye look.  As much as I love these duos, you may need a highlight shade and a good blending shade for the crease.
  • These have great staying power and don't crease with a primer, but with that said they really do need a primer underneath.  This may be a con for some, two of my favorite primers are the Too Faced Shadow Insurance and the NARS Smudge-Proof Eye Base.
  • The packaging.  Although not a huge con, the matte black rubber packaging can look dirty easily and is a magnet for fingerprints.  Nevertheless, it is very sturdy and has a solid snap closure.  The duo also includes a mirror, but honestly it's too small to be of much use.

Have you tried the NARS Duo Eyeshadows?  Let me know what you think!  Some other popular duos in this collection I would recommend are Silk Road (icy peach pink & rose gold with gold flecks), Kahlahari (bronze pearl & milk chocolate), and Alahambra (metallic rose mist & golden champagne).  I personally have my eye on Cleo as my next purchase, a pale mint green paired with a sparkly teal.  Wild I know, but if I play around with it I think I could make it work and it could look awesome.  Overall I think these shadows are outstanding quality and if you are looking to expand your eyeshadow collection they offer some stunning and unique shades.  Hope everyone is having a good week!
