GOING AFTER WHAT YOU WANT...

going after what you want

The start of a new year brings a sense of renewal and a feeling of fresh possibilities and new experiences to be had.  I am so excited to see what 2015 brings and with the new year underway I wanted to do something a little different and post something to encourage us all to go after what we want.  I was a voracious reader of blogs for years and it was always something that I knew I wanted to do.  In 2014 I started Brazen Brunette and it was one of the scariest yet most rewarding things I have ever done.  I absolutely love blogging and interacting with you guys, and I have learned so much throughout this process.  So whatever it is that you have been thinking about doing or a dream you have for yourself my hope is that this year you go after it and pursue your passion, whatever that may be.

Last year I made a vision board for myself and I have it hung above my desk.  I look at it every morning and as I get ready the pictures and quotes on there inspire me to follow my dreams and stay positive.  There are a lot of things I want to do with my life…places to visit, knowledge to obtain, personal and professional goals.   And when I told people about these I felt judged and guffawed at, as if honey get out of your fantasy land and come down to real life, those things aren’t attainable.  And I refuse to accept that.  I refuse to go to a job everyday that I hate and settle for something, because someone is telling me that what I really want isn’t going to happen.  I refuse to be in a relationship with someone who isn’t fulfilling my needs just because society is telling me I should settle down and get married.  I feel that for some reason there tends to be a stigma attached to having high expectations of oneself.  There’s an undertone of who does she think she is that she can do that or be that.  And that’s why I think it’s scary sometimes to go after what we want and tell other people our goals and ambitions.  There’s the fear of failure, of criticism, of not being good enough.  But if we don’t believe in ourselves how can we expect anyone else to.  Once you’re honest with yourself and others about what you want in your life, you allow yourself to go after it.  We only have one life to live, so we might as well get out there and live it.  And the truth is that if others are criticizing you or shutting you down for being ambitious that is nothing more than fear and has more to do with them than you.  It is a reflection of their  fear of other people’s success and maybe a little jealousy that they don’t have the courage to go after what they want in life.

motivational quotes

As the saying goes, “If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.”  And it’s true.  I know we don’t all have the luxury of quitting our jobs and going out and pursuing our passions, I know I don’t, but I think in the time outside of our 9-5 job or school or whatever your situation may be we can place ourselves in an atmosphere of growth to move towards what we want.  I think a lot of us realize our dreams and yearn to achieve them, but find it easier to back away and do something mediocre because it is easier or we feel our circumstances or responsibilities in life limit our potentiality.  A lot of us search for happiness outside of ourselves, be it in relationships, technology, material things, because we are trying to escape our reality.  If our reality was so great we wouldn’t be dreading Monday morning or counting down the days to the weekend.  If we were following our dreams and doing exactly what we wanted to do there wouldn’t be a reality to escape from or this need to ‘get away.’

f scott fitzgerald quote

In my experience if you let people know about your goals there is usually a guy who knows a guy who can help you out, but you need to ask.  And you need to take action.  I can stare at my goal list and vision board everyday, but if I don’t make moves toward achieving those goals and implement positivity into my life then no change is going to occur. People always talk about the importance of following your dreams, how wreckless, valuable, insensible it is.  And if you ask me why you should go after what you want, my response would be, Why not?  You deserve to be happy and to achieve anything in your life that you work towards.  And don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something or that you’re not good enough because you are.  So I hope this post provided you a little motivation this Monday morning and if you want to read a similar post I wrote on Nine Ways to Be Happier you can Click Here.  Do something that scares you, take a leap of faith, and go after what you want.  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and leave me a comment below letting me know your goals for 2015!

  2. People are so quick to cut down big dreams. They think it won't happen... & it won't -- for them. Let's keep dreaming, sister!
